Ensure All Your Possessions Stay Damage-Free

When you want to store your valuables safely, it is important to pack them properly in order to keep them safe from any damage. 135 Self Storage presents a series of simple steps for you to follow before storing your things. Have a look:
  • Blankets, draperies, and clothing - Make sure to have all your blankets, draperies, and off-season clothing cleaned before packing them on hangers in a wardrobe box
  • Books - Pack books flat, not standing on end (which may cause damage to the spines). Since books are extremely heavy, don't pack too many in a single box or mix them with fragile items
  • Lawn mowers - Always drain gasoline and oil from small engines before storing them
  • Mirrors and pictures - Large pieces should be stored in specially designed boxes, while smaller pictures can be wrapped in bubble wrap or packing paper safely and stored in boxes along with your clothing, linens, and other soft items
  • Leather (couches and clothes) - Treat your leather valuables with a leather conditioner and protect them with a plastic cover prior to storage. Keep leather couches off the floor using pallets
  • Mattresses - Use plastic covers to protect mattresses and furniture
  • Furniture and tables - It's best to disassemble your tables to conserve storage space. Wrap tabletops with furniture pads to protect them from soil and scratches, and protect the legs together with packing paper. For added safety, tape the table legs to the protective wrap that's been placed around the corresponding item
  • Photos - Since old photographs tend to curl over time, try placing them between 2 pieces of cardboard and placing them together to keep them flat. Never store irreplaceable photos in your unit. Since negatives take up such little space, consider keeping them with you

How Should You Organize Your Storage Room?

  • Place heavy furniture, boxes, and other weighty items at the bottom
  • Buy specially designed boxes for mirrors and pictures
  • Leave a few inches between items to allow ventilation
  • Place the items you are least likely to need in the room first
  • Place cartons in a manner that you can easily read the labels listing their contents
  • Leave items you are most likely to need near the door for easy access
  • Securely latch and lock your storage room door when leaving
